The first effect of the law has been to reduce the number of licenses in New York city to about 1700. Those who failed to apply were the pro prietors of the smaller beer saloons, who could not afford to pay the $800 required. A more important effect upon the revenues is an increase of more than one million of dollars in license fees to the city treasury, besides a contribution to the stat® treasury of nearly $1,500,000 from the city of New York. Still ambitious to beat Chicago, it is said that in New York, on the site of the old International Hotel, Nos. 11 to 23 Park Row, the tallest build ing in Gotham is to be erected. It will be 386 feet high, twenty-six stories in the main and three in the towers. The weight of the struc ture is to be 52,000 tons. The front of the building will be peculiar by reason of the complete omission of an important cornice. In the foun dation, piles, 75 feet long, under water, will be united at the head by a concrete bed 3 feet thick.
